My Story

I’m Catherine Cox, a North Devon–based writer and community engagement practitioner. I’ve spent much of my working life creating spaces where people feel able to notice, reflect and reconnect - in schools, community projects and outdoor learning settings.

Before moving into community engagement work, I worked for many years in education, including as a headteacher. That experience gave me a deep respect for care, safeguarding, and the quiet skill of listening well. More recently I’ve developed story-led projects that help people connect with place and purpose - often through nature, creativity and meaningful conversation.

I created Story Portraits because I believe that behind every organisation doing good work there are human stories that deserve to be held with dignity. When told with care and consent, these stories help others understand what has changed, why it matters, and why support is needed.

I’m drawn to work that is both practical and heartfelt - where stories are not extracted, but invited; not polished into performance, but shaped gently into something shareable and true.

Outside of work you’ll usually find me gardening, walking, sea swimming, drawing, learning something new, or writing metaphorical stories that help life feel a little more spacious.

Fees

Fees vary depending on scope (length, interviews, consent/approvals, and how the story will be used). I’m happy to offer a clear quote after a short initial conversation, and I can work flexibly with charities and community organisations.

PILOT CASE STUDY

Pilot case study (a simple way to start)

If you’d like to explore this work without committing to anything large, we can begin with a small pilot: one impact case study / Story Portrait, created through a consent-led process. This includes a full case study (400–700 words), a short version (50–150 words) for web/newsletter use, and 6–10 pull-quotes. It’s a practical, low-pressure way to see if my approach and writing style are the right fit for your organisation.

Safeguarding

Because this work often involves sensitive experiences, I work in a consent-led and safeguarding aware way. I only collect the information needed for the project, store it securely and use it only for the agreed purposes. Individuals are given clear choices about what can be shared, how it will be used and whether they wish to remain anonymous. I follow the safeguarding policies and procedures of partner organisations and can provide documentation on request.
